Summer in New England!
The following is a list of summer programs and family-friendly events for children and families in the New England area from June-August 2008. Included here are summer camps, festivals, fairs, and misc. links to research like-minded gatherings on your own. Some are related to, or inspired by, Waldorf education. Others are complementary (for example, nature-based programs) or simply ones that we consider of possible interest to families who live in, or may be traveling to, our region during the summer season. This is by no means a comprehensive listing. We add programs to this listing as they come to our attention. CONNECTICUT Housatonic Valley Waldorf School Nature-Arts Summer Camp A healthy balance of stimulating and relaxing activities, indoors and out, with an emphasis on the arts and nature. For ages 4-10. Offered in two separate age ranges. Five weeks of sessions possible. Little Acorn Playgarden Children enjoy circle time, fingerplays, puppet shows, watercolor painting, beeswax modeling, coloring, nature walks, outdoor play, and much more! Based in Brookfield. MASSACHUSETTS Lowell Folk Festival July 25-27 in Lowell. Returning to downtown Lowell for the 22nd summer, the FREE Lowell Folk Festival brings a proud history of traditional folk music, ethnic foods, and crafts demonstrations that attract visitors from across the country. Summer at Steiner The Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School Summer Program offers a Waldorf inspired summer day program for children entering grades Kindergarten - 8. Each day begins with a lively circle of singing, dancing and fun. Activities include outdoor games, craft-making, pool swimming lessons and play, Green River exploration and horseback riding lessons. These are complemented by all-day field trips to a local lake for swimming, hiking and picniking. Summer Story Hour for Children Six Mondays from 10:00-11:00 am (June 23, 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28). Please join Early Childhood Teachers from The Waldorf School in Lexington for an hour of singing, simple finger games, a puppet story, a small snack, and outdoor play time. The story hour is most appropriate for parents and their children aged 4 to 5 years, but all are welcome. A small donation is requested. Summer Story Hours Every Tues. in July (1, 8, 15, 22, 29) from 9:30 to 10:30 Cape Ann Waldorf School offers an opportunity for children ages 3-7 and their caregivers to play in our Kindergarten playground, have a snack outside, and hear a story from one of our teachers in the Kindergarten room. These events are free and open to the public. Summer Playgroup Maureen Ryan, kindergarten assistant in the Evergreen kindergarten at The Waldorf School in Lexington, will be offereing a summer playgroup for young children. We will play outside, come together inside for a snack and circle time. Half day or full day programs available. Please call Maureen at 617-491-6713 for more information. Waldorf Inspired Day Camp I will be offering a week of day camp at my home in Lincoln, Ma. Multi-age, Kindergarten-5th grade. One Week only: June 16-20, 8:30-3:30. Space is limited. Each week, the children will explore games, music, nature and science activities, arts, and crafts related to a weekly theme. All programs will take place at The Waldorf School in Lexington, a site that abuts 185 acres of woods and meadows within 20 minutes of downtown Boston. 34th Annual NOFA Summer Conference Aug. 8-10 at the UMass. Amherst. Run by Northeast Organic Farming Association. Featuring TONS of workshops, key speakers, music and dance, vendors, children's program, special teen program, and much more! MAINE Ashwood Waldorf School Summer Classes Summer Garden Classes on Wed. mornings. Topics including Bark Boat Making, Making Fairies, Felt a Bead Necklace, and more! At the Ashwood Waldorf School in Rockport. 33rd Annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival August 15-17 in Machias, Maine. Over 200 Craft Booths, music, tours, lectures, pie-eating contests, and much more! 26th Annual Wilton Blueberry Festival August 1-2 in Wilton. This two-day event has something for everyone! The biggest parade around, food, vendors, music - you name it. Saturday evening boasts one of the best fireworks shows anywhere. Lodging fills quickly - book ahead! Maine Lobster Festival July 30-Aug. 3 in Rockland. Lots of lobster and other food, cooking demos, lobster crate race, big parade, music, and much more! Thomas Point Beach 30th Annual Bluegrass Festival August 28-31 in Brunswick. All-Star line-up of bluegrass performers for all 4 days. Food vendors and family camping on site. NEW HAMPSHIRE Camp Glen Brook Weaving Waldorf Education with traditional New England camping since 1946 in Marlborough, NH. Pine Hill Child Care Center will hold a Nature Summer Camp for children ages 6 - 10, running in two-week segments. Each session will have a specific focus: Session 1: Shelters and Storytelling, Session 2: Gathering and Nourishment, Session 3: Clothing and Music, and Session 4: Crafts and Celebrations. Part of Pine Hill Waldorf School. The camp will be held at ConVal High School in Peterborough. Richmond Blueberry Fiddle Festival August 8-9 at the (new location!) Cheshire Fairgrounds in Swanzey. Lots of fiddle music, fiddle contest, wholesome food, vendors, games for children. Silver Lining Circus Camp Based in Temple. The program is an exciting summer day-camp for ages 5-18. Now in our 9th year, our goal is to provide a fun and richly rewarding circus experience for children of any skill level. Run by Jackie Davis (educator at Pine Hill Waldorf School) and her husband Rick Davis (school residency director of Circus Smirkus). Kroka Expeditions "Where consciousness meets wilderness". Founded in 1996, Kroka Expeditions is an Earth Living Skills School dedicated to assisting young people in developing strong character, responsibility, community and a sense of place in harmony with nature. All of our programs offer sustainable community living experiences balanced with state of the art instruction in adventure sports and the ancient art of wilderness living. Based in Marlow. NEW YORK Aurora Waldorf School Summer Offerings Featuring Sweet Peas Parent-Toddler Program & Children's Garden Summer Program, as well as Arts and Activities for the Older child. The Brooklyn Waldorf School will offer a Summer Arts Program for ages 4-10. Runs 9:00AM to 3:00 PM Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday (2 weeks minimum - you can pick any 2 weeks). Green Meadow Waldorf School will offer a Summer Farm Days program for 4 - 6 year olds. Caring for lambs and calves, crafts, wholesome snacks, making ice cream, storytelling, water play, bread baking and more. Mon. mornings until 1:00 pm. Also, Summer Parent and Child Program. Enjoy making seasonal crafts and engaging in creative indoor play and outdoor water play with your child! A wholesome snack and tea will be provided. Six Wednesdays. Hawk Circle Wilderness Programs began in 1989 as a one week camp experience for teens, in the Upper Hudson Valley. After eight years, we moved in 1997 to Cherry Valley, NY where we currently base our camps and programs. We are situated on approximately 200 acres of woods, meadows, and wetlands on an old farmstead. Some staff are Waldorf graduates. Kinder Camp At Hawthorne Valley Have your child discover summertime at Hawthorne Valley! A seasonal rhythm filled with songs, stories,
snack, nature crafts and play will delight your child (ages 4-7). Numerous adventures through the streams, fields, forest
and farm of our gorgeous 400-acre campus will captivate their senses. The camp will be offered in one 3-week session and one
2-week session, from 9 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday starting in July. |
