Shellfish

Sometimes referred to as the Man and Animal block, the focus of this block is on the unique quality of the human being over the animal kingdom. There is an over-emphasis of select systems in some animals over others, which brings us to ask the question: What it does it mean to be truly human?

Here we have an artistic rendering of a snail, a clam, and a squid. The intention of this block is still observational, though more than mere nature studies. It is the bridge from the work of nature studies to more of a science, or lab-oriented, block. No matter the content, the work is still to be brought forth in an artistic way.

The Jellyfish

This is an artistic rendering of a jellyfish that was done as part of this block.  This picture shows the drawing, with accompanying text on the next page.

During this block, we also:
  • visited a museum with a special exhibit on jellyfish
  • visited our local zoo (comparative zoology by observation only)
  • visited a museum of natural history with examples of most species known to humankind (comparative zoology by observation only)
  • attended a hands-on workshop on marine life (sponges, jellyfish, mollusks)
  • took long walks on the beach
